DSD NOELL is building Germany’s largest lock gates for Brunsbüttel

The construction of the fifth lock chamber in Brunsbüttel is one of the most significant lock construction projects in Germany. DSD NOELL is carrying out this challenging large-scale project in collaboration with its consortium partner Plauen Stahl Technologie.

The scope of work includes workshop planning, fabrication, delivery (including preservation work), as well as the installation of the gates and their technical equipment, and other key trades.

Scope of work

  • 3 sliding gates with a total weight of approx. 6,700 t
    • Dimensions per gate: 47.55 m x 9.55 m x 20.95 m (L/W/H)
  • 3 lower carriages (including 1 spare lower carriage)
  • 2 upper carriages
  • 2 lifting pontoons with a total weight of approx. 690 t
    • Dimensions per pontoon: 33.00 m x 6.22 m x 6.76 m (L/W/H)

In addition, the project involves the integration of extensive technical systems into the sliding gates and lifting pontoons, including:

  • Ballasting, bilge and flushing systems
  • Electrical and control technology
  • 24 filling and emptying valves including a hydraulic system

Alos installation and dismantling work will be carried out in the lower and upper head areas, followed by the commissioning of the entire system.

With this project, DSD NOELL once again demonstrates its expertise in complex steel hydraulic engineering and infrastructure projects of the highest technical standard.
